Electrodiagnostic Testing Q & A
What is electrodiagnostic testing?
Electrodiagnostic testing is a group of outpatient procedures that assess the electrical activity of your muscles and nerves to diagnose pain, weakness, or numbness. It’s a safe and effective way to determine the source of your discomfort and determine what steps to take next.
Electrodiagnostic tests take less than an hour and require no downtime. As soon as you’re finished, you can return to work and other daily activities right away.
What types of issues can electrodiagnostic testing diagnose?
The team at Peak Spine & Sports uses electrodiagnostic testing to pinpoint the source of various issues, including:
- Tingling and numbness
- Muscle weakness
- Chronic muscle pain
- Cramping
- Carpal tunnel syndrome (chronic pain that affects the hands and wrists)
- Thoracic outlet syndrome (chronic pain that occurs near the collarbone and shoulder)
- Ulnar nerve entrapment (chronic pain just below the elbow)
You might also benefit from electrodiagnostic testing if you regularly experience leg and arm pain.
What are the types of electrodiagnostic testing?
The team at Peak Spine & Sports offers several types of electrodiagnostic testing, including:
Electromyography
Electromyography measures the electrical activity of your muscles. During this type of test, your Peak Spine & Sports provider inserts several very thin needles into various muscles. After placing the needles, you’re asked to flex and relax those same muscles.
Your provider watches a computer monitor that displays the electrical signals your muscles produce. Then, they interpret the signals to identify abnormalities with the nerves in your arms or legs.
Nerve conduction studies
A nerve conduction study (NCS) determines if your nerves function properly. Typically, NSCs are performed alongside electromyography.
During NCS, your Peak Spine & Sports provider attaches several electrodes to your skin. Once positioned, they send an electric current through the electrodes. The electrodes record the activity of your nerves to determine if they’re damaged.
How accurate is electrodiagnostic testing?
Electrodiagnostic testing is very effective at diagnosing injuries to the nerves and nerve roots as well as diseases that affect the nerves and muscles. The team at Peak Spine & Sports has years of experience conducting these tests and uses the most advanced diagnostic equipment.
