What Is Scoliosis?
Scoliosis is a side-to-side curvature of the spine that may also involve spinal rotation.

What Does Scoliosis Pain Feel Like?

What Causes Scoliosis?
Scoliosis may develop for several different reasons.
In many adolescents and adults, the cause is not completely clear. In other patients, scoliosis is related to degenerative disc disease, facet joint arthritis, asymmetric wear of the spine, osteoporosis, prior surgery, compression fractures, or underlying neuromuscular conditions.

Adult Scoliosis

That distinction matters. The best treatment plan is based on what is actually causing the pain, not simply the presence of scoliosis on imaging.
How Is Scoliosis Diagnosed?
Diagnosis begins with a careful conversation and physical exam.

The evaluation may include:
- Posture assessment

The diagnosis should connect the patient’s symptoms, exam findings, imaging, and functional limitations. Imaging alone does not tell the whole story.
How Is Scoliosis Treated?
Treatment depends on the location of pain, the cause of the curve, the severity of symptoms, imaging findings, nerve involvement, and the patient’s goals.
Some patients benefit from outside physical therapy referral, posture work, core strengthening, mobility exercises, bracing evaluation, or care coordination with another specialist. Others may need interventional pain care when symptoms are related to a more specific pain source.

Scoliosis is an alignment condition, but the pain often comes from specific structures placed under uneven stress.
